Free Science…

We have a little bit of an interest in Open Access here at F1000 (yes, I know F1000 itself is a subscription service, but bear with me). We’re part of the same company that brought you BioMed Central; we publish original, open access reviews; and we have the world’s largest? first? best? research poster repository.

So I was pleased to be able to talk to David Dobbs, quite a while ago now, about some ideas that have (finally!) made it into a Wired article titled Free Science, One Paper at a Time (also available, without ads, at David’s own website). On the surface, Free Science is about erstwhile F1000 Member Jonathan Eisen‘s quest to publish all his dead father’s academic (and publicly funded) papers online.

How hard could it be? Howard Eisen had been a federal employee, so his work rightly lay in some sense in the public domain. And Jonathan, as an heir, presumably owned copyright anyway, along with his brother Michael [...] Yet to the brothers’ continuing chagrin, Jonathan has found securing and publishing his father’s papers to be far harder than he expected.

–David Dobbs

The story david weaves, inspired by Jonathan’s quest, touches on the very nature of doing science, taking in such aspects as data sharing, credit for discoveries, peer review and librarians on the rampage. Rather than discuss it here (it’s not a short piece), I’m just going to heartily commend it to you. Go read: Free Science, One Paper at a Time.
